No personal email. An ability to read LJ, but oddly not to post comments. This being on a course thing might not be as great as I thought it would be....
Presumably Sally can't reply to your comment to say whether she wants that, without making a whole new post saying so...
You seem to have successfully managed to leave duplicate comments in Matthew's journal...

Oh, maybe it is just telling me I can't comment when it's really sent it. Boggle.
My employer blocks personal e-mail too (and, recently, LJ) - I can emphasize with the first one, it's really really annoying having to duplicate your electronic correspondence, especially as I can't read my work e-mail from home either. I know it's meant to "decrease distractions at work", but in the end it just uses up more of my time as I forward messages back and forth between my work and home accounts...

Conveniently I have an ssh tunnel[*] out to my home machine, which is running an http proxy so I get to read anything I want without even being aware of filters at work. Having personal webmail running on https helps as well, avoiding all the usual gmail/hotmail/etc filter.
[*] ssh was blocked on the firewall but IT opened it when I asked, so I assume they know I'm using it.
At Sunningdale? I didn't have either of those problems either on my laptop or on their computers.

There are two problems:
Internet in the library - my email is bizzare and personal and is just on Matthew's computer instead of on Google's computor or Hotmails computer etc. Therefore Sunningdale won't accept the weird security certificate for it. I asked them to add the website, and they seemed very willing to check it was email and add it, but then they had a big problem with their computers so didn't have any spare time to do it.
Internet in my room - my work laptop won't let me access any website unless I log in to the DH rois site as the very first thing I do. Sunningdale won't let me access any website unless I log in to the Sunningdale site as the first thing I do. You can see the obvious failiure modes here.
