I remember a path that wound by a long forgotten footbridge over the A14, through tangles of cows parsley and fronds of long wild grass. I remember freewheeling, giddy and laughing and frantically breaking as the road approached, watching rabbits scatter and cows stay calm and placid. I remember the illicit delight of taking the long way round just to watch the summer, and then curling up in Girton's grounds to soak up quantities of sun and mathematics that I no longer have the time for, wandering echoing corridors and pondering the age of obedient ears.

I don't think so, I think it's just that we have passed. I'm sure there are still students cycling helter-skelter round Girton and revising under trees. Anyway, sometimes you come across them unexpectedly in other people's photo albums. Ah, the inward eye which is the bliss of solitude...

I don't understand facebook. Maybe links to people's photographs don't work if you haven't friended the people in question?

You can link to the URL of the actual image (until they plug that hole at least). Photos that are not put up by someone in your network (who permits photos to be seen by others in that network) or who is not your friend, you cannot see, though. Ugh, grammar.

My Cambridge footpath memories are mostly of the Coton Footpath, and date from considerably earlier than my undergrad days. :)

Err, the tree's a light-haired policeman? Do they mind students revising underneath them?

The students are still here. I wander round Cambridge and watch them, doing the things I did (and some things that I didn't do) ten years ago. Life goes on essentially unchanged; it's just that we experience different parts of it.

I'm sure I'm missing some vital reference, but what are obedient ears? (Ones that wiggle when you tell them to wiggle? :-)

It would have made more sense to link to the answer than just the question!

I'm still not entirely sure that tells me in what way ears can be obedient, but I at least get a general sense of the gist now...

I did, but your Google-fu is clearly superior to mine, because all I came up with was Proverbs 25:12 which was less than informative.

I googled for "the age of obedient ears" [with quotes].

i got lost on that path at lunchtime just last summer :P

it's about at the limits of summertime lunch-'hour' cycling, so i don't go there too often (especially if i get lost!)

Without wishing to get lynched for being overly prosaic, by "footbridge" I assume you mean a bridge for farm vehicles?

if it's the one i'm thinking of - you'd be hard pressed to get farm vehicles over it.. what with the 4ft banks of earth stopping vehicles going over.

i may misremember, but i don't think it's motor-vehicle-navigable

I think you may have meant "frantically braking". Or not.

You made me think of the unexpectedly rhyming section of Summoned By Bells about cycling from the Dragon School to Godstow, which is a lovely piece of verse. I would quote it, if I could only remember where I might have a copy of SbB.

I shall have to seek out the footpath you mention...
