I have been waiting about 2 months for some books to turn up. They… - Sally's Journal
I have been waiting about 2 months for some books to turn up. They have now turned up. And it turns out I lost the book tokens I was buying them with in the move. I thought I'd put them safely in the Economics book, but that was something else. Where on earth did I put them?
ETA: I found my booktokens! :-) They were in The Bluffers Guide to Economics, not in The Economics of the Welfare State.
(see, I only bluff that I'm very political ;-) )

You collected all the book tokens in the world together (except for some of mine), and put them in a folder, didn't you?

And then I took enough of them out of the folder to pay for these books and took them to London where they sat on my desk for two months. And then I packed them into boxes when I moved desk. And now I don't know where they are.

How many unused book tokens do you have?????

It's kind of a hang-over from my whole failed-academic thing. Queens' gives you $lots of book tokens for getting firsts / merits, and if you buy a posh hardback you get it embossed with the college crest for free. In my first year, (well, at the start of my second year, BYKWIM)I spent them on a glorious embossed hardback of the first of Feynmann's lectures. With the plan being that there were three books, and three years, and wouldn't that be lovely. However, then someone else gave me their old 2 and 3, and I failed to get a first in second year, so the plan went eggshaped. But I still thought I ought to save these things to buy a Giant Expensive Hardback textbook in some academic subject (and 60 UKP from 3rd year and 4th year is quite a lot of book tokens).
It is only now I have been a civil servant for almost 2 years I can face just spending them on books that I want. I still feel a bit sad about it.
[Also, 80% of my book shopping happens in charity shops or library sales etc, and 5% happens at train stations when I have accidently finished my book, and 5% happens in supermarkets. None of which take book tokens. And books-I-really-want tend to be a bit obscure, so best bought on-line, and Amazon doesn't take book tokens. And Matthew complanes when I buy books.]
*hugs* My shiny-book lust is almost completely subsumed by my good-book lust, but it's still there occasionally, just not very indulged :(

Are they in a book you were reading, like a bookmark? With an elastic band around them?
Oh, what do I know.
You need to use the book tokens when the books arrive?

I don't understand the confusion here. I went to my cute local independant bookshop, and said "I want to buy these 5 books" and they said "We don't have them in but we can order them" and I said "Great! Let me know when they get in and I'll come and pick them up and pay for them".
So is your confusion mearly that there are still shops trusting enough that they will order books in for people before people pay them for the books, or that I said "turned up" and you thought I meant at my house or similar when I meant at the bookshop? Or something else?
Ah! In retrospect that should be obvious. My mistake was that when you said "order" I assumed you meant "bought (probably from the internet)" and then I forgot to re-examine that assumption in the light of the evidence. I could tell something obvious was going on, but was brain-stuck on what.

I didn't understand either. You just said "turned up" without any context.

I lost some photography studio vouchers in the move into TheShrubbery. They were a wedding present and we were going to spend them on a posh romantic photo of the two of us. :(

We have another house move looming - I wonder what will get lost in this one?
