Credit checks went through. And I phoned Mrs Choksy, and all was fine. So the house stuff is moving slowly and positively. It's really scary. We may not be entering the lofty ranks of people who are buying, but for the first time my income (well, and Matthews somewhat larger one) is guarenteeing my house. No more needing parents to rubber stamp whatever we do. It's a good (if slightly scary) feeling
On a related note, we'll leave Rivendell mid-September, so if anyone out there is house hunting in Cambridge still, or knows of nice people who are drop me a comment. It's a lovely house, and although I often whinge about the landlady, the location, etc etc it is gorgeous, and huge, and generally great. It currently has four bedrooms (there are 6 in total, but the landlady is currently storing stuff in them) two of which are huge and ensuite and eminently good for couples, one of which is a large single or small double room depending on how you want it, and one of which is a small single.
we're looking for a house from mid-sept, but rivendell is in girton, right?

Yes, Rivendell is in Girton
TBH I'm not a strong cyclist and it hasn't had a huge impact on my social life. And everyone at Girton College seems to cope. But yes, it is in Girton, and not central Cambridge. (It does mean you get a nice neighbourhood where the children throw snowballs instead of rocks, though ;-) ) I think the niceness of the house has made it worth it, if you wanted to come out and have a brief nosy it would be nice to see you (the size of the double rooms and the party space has to be seen to be believed!)
it'd be interesting to come and see it actually, it could prove quite convenient! Our house is lovely but the landlady is SO evil we are basically being forced to move, and we're used to having a large house. When would be convenient?
What's the landlady like in terms of asking for guarantors etc? we're two couples, but one-half of each couple has fairly unconfirmed finances (I hope to be confirmed by August, though).

The landlady is slightly insane, but not evil. She had a big fall out with Russels, and has been renting privately to us for a year (having found us through russels in the first place and rented to us through them for the first year) and doesn't seem to have much of an idea of how to find tenents without going back to the agents she hates. So if you came with our recommendation, and she didn't have any other ideas on how to find tenents, I could see it all being fine. But she is a bit mad, and very fond of cash in hand. Paying her the rent on time (currently 1350) seems to be the best way of winning her approval.
So pros, it's a fabulous house, it's huge, and it's lovely. Cons, It's not the cheepest four person house in Cambridge, it is in Girton, and it's part furnished (although the only thing it's really lacking is beds, and I will probably have to donate at least one double bed to the cause as we're moving back into furnished. It has a huge table and a sofa and white goods and wardrobes, and random bits of furnature etc) Do come and see it, it is a house designed for two couples. Friday night / Saturday morning - lunchtime I'm definitely around, or other evenings next week...
It's a bit more expensive than ours, and we might be only 3 people next year, but if it's nice it might be worth it. It is a bit far from the Carlton though ;)
We're very good at paying the rent on time, in the two years I've been managing households I've never missed a payment..go me..
we're actually looking at part furnished 'cos we have a lot of stuff already, so that's good too. It does seem a bit expensive if it's only part furnished though -- ours is £1200 for 4-beds and much closer to cambridge city. Oh well, it's worth looking anyway -- I'm afraid I don't actually know where it is, could you drop me an email (jal54) with the address?
oh, and I'll talk to folks about a good time, sat morning should be doable.
Almost the opposite of "opposite the carlton" :(
Does this mean the aga-ness is going away? I shall have to organise the ghoti
-pictures with some actual tuits, then!
hah, yes, unfortunately. Definitely by mid Sept.

Would he have other people? It's a very big house for just one of him!

Ah, I failed to read the original post in detail :)
