So, I don't think I'm going to stop blogging (facebook just isn't the same), and my current plan is to cross post to both Dreamwidth and LJ. This isn't a very well thought through position, I definitely don't approve of LJ's T&Cs - 'no breaking Russian law or talking about politics' isn't my style, and I was even more disturbed by the 'we are bringing this in without any discussion with the user base, and suddenly cutting you off from your journal unless you accept it'. So I _think_ I'm on a trajectory of Dreamwidth as primary blog, but this is a) a bit sad, and b) requires a bit of admin to sort out friends groups and make sure I've friended people on dreamwidth etc. So cross posting should keep happening for at least a bit, and I'll put up a note if that changes.

If you felt like leaving a comment to say 'I still read this, and I'm so-and-so on Dreamwidth' or 'I still read this and I don't have a dreamwidth account' that would help me a bit with my admin :-)

I am cross posting between LJ and Dreamwidth, there may be other comments there

I still read this :) And I... don't recall whether I have a DW account or not. I remember lots of very frustrating attempts to sign in to DW that ended up with me posting from some hideously long unreadable IP-address-style "username".

I don't have a DW account that I *use*, anyway! :)

I'm evilsusan on DW. I still read here and sometimes comment (for now), but no longer cross-post back to LJ with my own content.

I still read this but I only post on DW these days (same username) and will likely stop reading here soon.

I'm still reading this, and I don't have a DW account. Should I? Problem is I'm so lazy. And I have no idea who owns DW or whether it's any better, or whether saying you're going to follow Russian law is all that bad if you're in Russia. And last time I went to the home page of dreamwidth.org I couldn't work out what on earth it was or what was going on (it looks like they've fixed this a bit now).

DW is owned by two ex-LJ people, who started a spin off under the banner of 'more transparency and fewer adverts', basically. Their own words about what they're trying to do and why are here: http://www.dreamwidth.org/legal/principles

They have a FAQ for people who know how to use LJ: http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=121

My model is that actually DW is a bit chattier than LJ now, and a huge pile of people I know who actually actively blog have moved over their already.

That does all sound promising. The principles document is good. On the downside I had had a poke around 'about' pages etc and couldn't find out who they were (nor does it say on that page in fact), which made it seem a bit shadowy. You'd think they'd have a 'Hey, this is who we are! We're doing this cool thing!' page.

Besides inertia and my two remaining readers, the other thing that's kept me from moving is what a rubbish name Dreamwidth is. ('You can read about it on my LiveJournal!' / 'You can read about it on my Dreamwidth!') But I should just get over that.
