I broke a Billy bookcase a long time ago, and kept the shelves, because I thought spare Billy shelves would be useful. I don't know, maybe I thought I'd fill an entire Billy with paperbacks, and so want the extra shelves, or maybe I thought I'd saw the shelves in half longways, and make cute minishelves so the books behind the books in front could peep over their heads.

But I clearly haven't done any of that. So I think I'm going to throw them away. Before I do, do any of you want them? It was a dark grey Billy if that makes a difference.

How on earth did you break a Billy? I thought they were pretty much indestructible? Certainly much more robust than the competitors.

Alas, my Billies are all in red-brown — a colour they've now discontinued so I've had to finish filling my library using Argos bookcases. )-8

If you put too many books on the shelf, the sides bow out, unsurprisingly. At that point, the shelf and all the books on it fall down and plummet to the floor. Where it lands on your whisky collection. Oddly, non of the whisky broke, but the bottom of the Billy cracked.

How many books is "too many"? My dictionary shelf, for example, is still flat as a pancake, as are the art print shelves. I'm not sure how one could get heavier, even by double-stacking paperbacks?

But… ah, yeah. Moving.

If and when I move house, I'll have to move my Billies. Out of interest, would you recommend dismantling them, or moving them intact?

We've tended to move them intact; this requires some care from the removers (they need to remove the removable shelves and store the little pegs carefully), but can be done. I don't think they'd survive being fully dismantled.

What would go wrong if they were fully dismantled? You'd need a new set of nails for the back board, but apart from that the process is reversible, isn't it?

I'd be surprised if IKEA didn't sell packs of replacement pegs. Possibly you'd end up having to buy some superfluous cams and dowels as well…

Also, we've moved house about once a year for the past 6 years. I don't think moving is good for furniture.

I could be tempted by up to three, actually. My Billies aren’t the right color but that needn’t be a problem, especially with sufficient lack of dusting…

Oh, excellent, I have 4, so you're very welcome to three of them. And it's a nice excuse to visit :-) I could drop them off on my way home on Friday (guess 6pm-ish?) although I couldn't stay too long..?

Could certainly manage 1830, 1800 is do-able if I get to work a bit earlier than usual in the morning l-)

Oh, I can definitely find enough work to do to make sure I pass by yours at 18.30, not 18.00 if it helps :-) It means I stop less long for chat though, because I have to get home for dinner :-)

How about I let you know what my ETA home is when I know for sure, i.e. sometime on Friday morning?

I'm drippy so I forgot to put the shelves in the car. Err, how about next week?

Minor practical note to people who do want shelves: Billy is available in 60cm and 80cm widths, and ISTR maybe also in two different depths. It might be worth checking shelf dimensions!

My shelves measure as 25cm x 76cm (i.e. an 80cm Billy).

Actually historically Billy was available in 3 widths 40, 60 and 80 cm but the 60 has been discontinued which is irritating!. I think they're all 28 deep and there are two heights too. The taller of which is 202.

Yeah. Though so far as I'm aware, the shelves are interchangeable between units of different heights.

I'd not encountered the 40cm width. Discontinuing 60cm is, indeed, irritating — though not as irritating as discontinuing "my" colour before my book collection had expanded to fill the entire room.

I managed to get a corner unit before they discontinued red-brown, though. I like my corner unit. (-8

Yes, height of Billy's make no difference to shelves, only possibly to how many you can use, though as the shelf at lower height (106cm) is fixed even in a 202 height cabinet, it doesn't make that much difference. Interestingly, I note from the IKEA website it is now possible to buy extra shelves in normal Billy versions and not only glass shelves as was previous the case.

I have 40cm by 202cm bookcase, it was handy for the corner it was bought for. We'll have to see how it does in new flat.

My problem is I have a mix of beech and birch effect ones which isn't too bad.

We still have a Billy or two in the spare room, but we're not a very deserving cause. So please only give them to us if you'd otherwise throw them out.

The whole point of this entry is that I'm just about to throw them out ;-)

Can you chat to ewx? I will default to three to him and 1 to you if I don't hear further, but his comment doesn't make it very clear if he actually wants all three, or is just being kind to get them off my hands :-)

I think I can use three but it’ll take some rearranging to discover one way or another. ceb is nearby if the answer is “no” in any case.
I’m not sure what ceb's criteria for deserving causes are, if they’re based on unshelved book counts then I may well be one!
