Have to say, I wouldn't have thought of you there. You've always struck me as surprisingly un-opinionated for someone so thoughtful and internet-talkative: your big can-of-worms posts, for example, get that way because you post about things you don't know any of the answers to. (Which I often think is why they attract so many comments: when you post an unfinished thought process, one need only feel one can contribute the next step in order to think it's worth posting, whereas some people will wait to post until they've finished thinking it out and then they'll publish a self-contained opinionlet with no loose ends to which it's hard to respond usefully without thinking your response out with the same care.)

If I had to caricature your behaviour in Internet arguments, you wouldn't be the one hell-bent on telling people they were wrong. You'd be the one responding to almost any strongly stated opinion by saying "ooh, but then there's this to consider, and this too, so I'm not sure really, gosh it's difficult" – and then responding to the contrary opinion in exactly the same way :-)

(That isn't an insult, in case you were in doubt. I have much the same tendency; I find it hard to come down on one side of any nontrivially complicated fence, because I can nearly always see merit in most of the points of view. I'm possibly less willing than you to be vocal about my misgivings, but when someone states a controversial opinion with apparent conviction I usually have them.)

Oh, I assumed Sally was in bed and Matthew was trying to leave the computer; and I expect both happen;[1] but I still don't know for sure which M meant... :)

[1] Can I use two semicolons like that?

Everyone's citing that one today. Someone at work even emailed it to me, and her partner had sent it to her. I guess it speaks to many people.

What I don't understand is how they're supposed to figure out they're wrong without us telling them. :(

And that's why God invented laptops.

Hey! What's wrong with the image of me being in bed?! Are you sexualising my statement? It wasn't sexualised.

I'm not in work, I'm working from home this morning (I *often* lie in bed when using my laptop), and then this afternoon going to London... theoretically, as I've not received permission to protest by post :(

Oh! The mental image you didn't want was of my bed, not of me? ;-)

Sadly my bed has never been sexualised.

You know ... I'm quite disappointed by all of this prudish behaviour by the socks girl.

There was a bit when it went quiet, and I stopped checking it to the point where I forgot to check it. Also, you know, the civil service needs me...
