Poll #840532… - Sally's Journal
LJs new tracking pins!
I use them and I'm proud
I use them *blush*
I'm not going to say if I use them or not
I don't use them
I (honestly) don't know what you're talking about
I'm going to claim I don't know what you're talking about
I use them on atreic's LJ!
I stalk people I fancy
I stalk people I hate
You haven't given the option I need, which is "I sometimes try to use them for posts in communities I'm interested in, but I can't get the blighters to work so I don't know why I bother".
My preferred answer would have been `I haven't used them'. It's not a principle that I don't use them, there's just been nothing I've wanted to track, and anyway, I'd need to get back into the habit of checking the email account where LJ comments notifications go.

Ditto. I may use them in the future but haven't run across anything that I can be bothered to track yet.

Yep, same here.

manic manual stalking is so much more authentic

My LJ style doesn't currently show them, because I haven't yet got round to modifying it so that it does. I might perfectly well use them if I did.
wah I can't stalk the poll to find out who gave what answers :-(
This reminds me of bash.org quote 115:
<BlackDeth> i like stalked this girl sorta :D
<BlackDeth> like once she asked me for a ride home from work
<BlackDeth> and i took her home... i dropped her off at her house
<BlackDeth> and shes like... wait a minute..how did you know where i lived?
I tried them, but I couldn't see a way to make them send plain-text e-mails so I stopped.

They've fixed that now I think. I'm pretty sure my last couple of notifications have been plain text.
I don't use them because I'm still a bit confused about what they are and what they do.
A wonderful necessary idea, but I haven't investigated exact details yet. I will pin whenever relevent posts appear, but haven't yet.
And I don't hate anyone, but will stalk people I hate, while it's still dawning on me.

Ditto that question, and you have an AWESOME icon.
Are those the little drawing pin icons you get next to comments now?
Heheh, I hadn't actually realised what they were for. You can use them to follow a thread in someone else's LJ? That's cool. I remember about 2 years ago, senji
was saying he wished there was a way to subscribe to the comments on a particular LJ entry made by another person.
I suspect if that is what they are, the main use I'll find for them is to keep track of fandom drama!! Wheeee!
I think the concerning bit is that you can use them to track every post made by a person.
If someone makes a post that they intend to be private but they accidentally make it public and the correct that error 30 seconds later there is a window when there is a reasonable chance someone will have read the post. One could make this even worse (or better depending on whether you like stalking) by getting the notifications to go to a bot that saved the lj posts it received the url of by email.

by "people I fancy" I mean I get a message when My boyfriend updates.
I also pinned Rob so I get messaged when he makes a post tagged nina321.
It worries me when that boy talks about me :p
I have you pinned for any posts!!</stalk>
I don't use them often, but they are really useful when I want to follow a discussion on an LJ I don't have friended - like the ones linked on metafandom
The notification when someone friends you is pretty handy as well.

Yeah, I turned off the userpic notifications (I'd not even got them sending mail) when I went and looked at my inbox and it had about 15 pages of new icons.
I do still have it mailing me when someone friends me.
And for a short while I was watching for any new entries in rmc28
because we were all waiting for news, I've turned that back off now. I might watch the comments of this post since it'll soon fall off the front page of my friends list and it's moderately interesting.
I like that you can choose whether you want an email or just it to be noted in the message centre. And it seems SMS notifications are coming soon as an option too. I don't think there's anything so important I'm likely to use it for that.

Oh, and I'd not say I was proud that I use them, but I'm not ashamed of it. Then again I'm not trying to stalk anyone with them.
I love them - saves me having to keep millions of webpages open, and means I can easily follow threads at work or elsewhere with a simple email check.
I only use them for comments though, don't really see the point for entries (since I still have to login and visit the page to read it).

I love them - they are great for keeping an eye on interesting threads that have slipped both my mind and the bottom of my flist.
I didn't know you could pin people when they used certain tags! I have never bothered tagging my entries much, perhaps I should.
You can pin people in their entirety too.
err by that I mean pin to see when they make a post of any kind.

You know that is a wee bit stalkery. I've got my fiancee pinned when he makes a post to his own journal, but to read it everytime he comments on someone else would feel like spying on him!
Oh! Sorry, no it doesn't let you go quite that far - I meant posts to their own journal, not comments.
They have said that they intend to add that feature though - although they said it will be a privilege you can give to people you trust rather than something you can do to anyone.
I think it would be quite a nifty feature. Already on forums its a standard feature so you can see what kind of perspective someone comes from, or if they write something insightful it lets you find all their other comments to hoover up any more wisdom from them.

when they make a post of any kind
Is that true? Isn't it only when they make a public post?
I tried it to see what it did, but didn't receive notification for filtered posts that I was on the filter for - not sure about 'friends only' posts...
[Have subsequently turned it off again]
I really should have been more specific ;-)
I meant that you get a notification if someone makes a post (not comment) that you have permission to see.
|Date:||October 10th, 2006 10:56 am (UTC)|| |
I am not using stalker pins because they are a bad solution to the thing I want to do, which is to be informed when any of my friends list posts any comment anywhere.
|Date:||October 10th, 2006 10:56 am (UTC)|| |
My poll response is therefore referring to life in general, rather than stalker pins in particular.
They're intending to add that functionality on a 'I grant permission to foo to stalk me in this way' kind of a way.
I use them to track new replies to posts that I have found interesting, but not to track people. AFAICS they're redundant anyway for the latter purpose, since the effect is no different from adding someone to my friends list. I did briefly track a friend, at his request, to test whether or not this would allow me to see that he had posted something I was locked out of; the answer is that it does not.

GIP (or maybe GIC). Not mine, but I laughed.
